100 Words: The Parable about the Soil (or soul)

February 21, 2019

(thoughts inspired and borrowed from Soul Keeping by John Ortberg and the Christian New Testament scripture parable of Mark chapter 4)

My first attempt in collecting and condensing a thread of thought and consciousness into a 100 word post. The intention is not to emphasize my own understanding, but instead, to communicate what direction my thought has taken. Basically, I want “the thought” not “my thought” to be what you’re left with after reading. So….thanks for reading.

Myself, those around me, society. Sowing. Always sowing.

Thoughts, words and deeds. A seed. Always a seed.

A steady line of planters sowing an infinite row of seeds.

Good or bad, seed quickly takes root. And everyone is sowing all day, every day.

But the soil…

The soil of my life. My soul. Who is tending that real estate?

Who pulls the thistles and digs up the rocks? Who waters and plows?

And the responsibility of soil under my watch? Not mine, but that given me, to tend?

The hope of life is in the soil.

Soil is the variable.

“Excellence is not simply an outcome. It is the description of how you should live life every day in pursuit of maximizing who you are as a runner, a student, and a person. You should do more than achieve excellence. You should aspire to be excellent.”
